Billy Rainey

Early in my career, I learned that every problem, conflict, and success begins with the same question: “What’s the story?” For more than 30 years, that question guided my work in television and advertising. My job was to listen, ask questions, and understand what was happening beneath the surface.

While the settings have changed, the question remains the same. As a counselor, I believe understanding our stories—where they come from, how they shape us, and whether they still serve us—is often the first step toward meaningful change.

Education:

I am currently completing my Master of Arts in Counseling with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy at Trevecca Nazarene University. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Boston University and spent more than three decades working in television, advertising, and creative development before entering the counseling profession.

Style:

I approach counseling from a collaborative and person-centered perspective. I am particularly interested in Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Bowen Family Systems Theory, and Emotionally Focused Therapy. I believe clients are the experts on their own lives, and my role is to help create a space where they can explore challenges, recognize strengths, and discover new possibilities for growth and change.

Hobbies:

When I’m not in class or at the counseling office, I enjoy mentoring emerging creatives, spending time with my family, perfecting my pizza-making skills, watching classic television, and spending time with my Newfoundland, Biggie. Attempts to convince him that he is not a lap dog have been largely unsuccessful.

Specialties:

Adults, couples, life transitions, relationship concerns, family dynamics, divorce and adjustment, anxiety, identity development, and personal growth.
