Maria

Hi, I’m Maria! I help folks with complex trauma histories go from being highly critical with a harsh inner voice(s) to feeling more compassionate towards themselves, allowing them to find freedom and confidence to live a life they love.

I’m a great fit for someone who is burnt out because of an overwhelming sense of responsibility to take care of everything and desire to be recognized for their worth. I like to support those who are caught in loops of “should’ve” thoughts and have mood swings dependent upon someone else’s mood: “if they’re ok, I’m ok.”  I’m familiar with the struggle of identifying emotions and difficulty managing strong reactions that look like leave/avoid/shut down or get bigger and louder towards others. I guide adults who feel like they lost themselves in relationships or big life changes. I’m a great fit for non-native English speakers and anyone experiencing tension with family members due to generational or cultural differences, and folks having a sense of lost/confused/torn identity due to their family’s im/migrant history, traumas kept secret, language barriers, or conflicting values and beliefs. I also have experience working with early childhood trauma that developed parts of ourselves who don’t seem to work well with others, are not understood, or have shrunken. This may include losing track of time and place. Others may have told us that we aren’t acting like ourselves. Lastly, I do grief work. I support individuals and organizations experiencing immense sadness due to disconnection, accidents, systemic oppression, and other man-made or natural disasters.

Education:

I have a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology, Master of Arts in International Psychology with a concentration in culture-centered interventions and community resilience, and Master of Social Work. My education is supplemented with capstone experiences in Senegal, Ghana, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Style:

I practice integrative, trauma informed therapy that is guided by phase-oriented treatment. Rather than adhering rigidly to a single modality, I weave together evidence-based approaches including somatic psychotherapy, ego state work, cognitive-behavioral techniques, neurobiology, and cultural meaning-making.

Hobbies:

I love being a dog mom to a border-collie poodle named Shoto, watch anime, and body build! I’m a certified personal trainer with 7 years experience.

18 years and over - trauma (early childhood, attachment-based, cultural and generational, collective), dissociative disorders, acculturation stress, and grief.
